Day 22 Following Removal of Coccyx
When I began researching my options to control my coccyx pain, I clearly remember my surgeon advising me that a month or two after the surgery I would wonder why on earth I got the surgery. Well, today that’s the case. My wound still has not closed, but luckily there doesn’t seem to be any sign of infection. However, as my surgeon put it, that area is “full of nerves” and I definitely felt significant pain today. What’s interesting is that I don’t feel the incision itself, but I feel a very deep, achy pain – feels like someone kicked me as hard as they could many times over.
The bruising is gone, and I am able to sit in a chair for up to 15 minutes at the start of the day, but that causing the deep aching pain that lasts for the entire day.
My bar is set low, and I know that recovery is going to take time, but I’m afraid I might be pushing myself too much.

I experienced the pain for over 10 years before deciding on surgery. Only you and your doctor can determine if the surgery is worth it. Its too early to determine if the surgery has been ‘worth it’ to me. In fact, the surgeon told me it would be up to 18 months before I would know for sure, but he said over time I should start to feel better.
My surgeon told me that there would be many days when I would says to myself “Why did I bother to have this surgery?”. I have asked that several times, but given the doctor warned me about this in the beginning, I’m keeping the bar low.
Good luck to you I understand your pain.
I have chronic pain in the coccyx for more than 3 years now. While it is true that I absolutely miss and long for the days when I used to sit down anywhere anytime without thinking that sitting is painful in any way, I seem to have my problem under control.
The key is constant exercise and stretches taught to me by Rajveer Singh in India (coccyx.org). However, I do feel that it’s a constant battle. A year ago the condition defeated me but now I feel like constant effort by myself to stay fit and stretch is what makes me feel victorious. It’s a straining effort though and I wish I just wouldn’t have to stretch constantly in order to minimize pain when sitting. Right now I would say I’m at 3/10 pain when I sit down longer than 15 minutes increasing to 5/10 after an hour.
My job entails I sit down but I have gotten used to frequent get -ups, walking, stretching to stay ahead and control my condition not feel controlled.
Having read about my problem on coccyx.org and elsewhere, it seems my sitting discomfort will never go away since it’s been three years already with injections not working. Do you think that coccyx removal is feasible for me or do you think I’m not suffering enough ? I would just kill to sit down for as long as I want without feeling literally pain in the butt ! I’m concerned for the business I just opened and whether I can pull the long hours needed sitting down.
Good luck healing !! I’m following your progress here and wish you a speedy recovery and HOURS Of pain free sitting !!

The problem I was experiencing is that I was in pain constantly when I sat down. I could never get comfortable, no matter the exercises or the medication. From what you have described, that reminds me of how I was about 5 years ago. I would be able to sit for about half the time without being in excruciating pain, but I decided to have the surgery when I was in constant pain.
Having tailbone pain is very frustrating and it’s not a pain that many people can identify with. Even most doctors don’t know how to properly treat it.
I wish you all the luck in the world, and I hope that you are able to find some relief.
Hang in there and always take ownership of your own health. If you ever get to a point where you think in your mind that you really can’t handle the pain anymore, that is the time to seriously consider the surgery. I know that my recovery is going to be long and it is expected to be about 2 years before I will know how the surgery has affected my pain levels. That is a long time for recovery, but I am looking forward to being in less pain than I was before.
I had mine removed at the end of November. I had actually severed the last 2 bones of the coccyx a few years ago and no one caught it until last summer when the physical therapist recommended a different xray viewpoint. I am almost 3 months post op but still having pain when I sit. The issue I had before surgery was walking distances, which is now resolved. I’m wondering how your recovery is going. Not many people have gone through this, and the ones that have say it may be a few more months up to a year before I should see a major difference. Did they give you any exercises to do to strengthen that area?
Im 2 weeks post op. Can’t sit at all. Im.frustrated. ate u guys working? ? I do computer work and scared to go back. I can’t.dot 2 seconds. How can I last 8 hrs. I feel same pain as before and also incision
I went back to work after 8 weeks. I started out sitting a mi ute or two. It took a while… I sit at a desk all day too.
My pain was constant. Sit stand walk. Couldn’t do any exercise or chores without causing so much pain. Been off work since November.
